Hi! My name is Tara. I'm the teacher behind the scenes here at Science in the City. Welcome to my online 'classroom;' my corner of the internet! I am hoping to share with you various strategies, reflections, and resources that I have used and learned in my teaching experience to help you and your students succeed be even more successful, and to free up some of your time. I am a science teacher, and also certified in special education. I spent the last year and this upcoming year in a new position working for the IT department, teaching online courses within our district. It was an exciting change, and a definite learning opportunity!
I'm from upstate NY and have taught students of various ages, from 7th grade through college. I have had the opportunity of teaching in a variety of different ability levels, special ed and newcomer ELL, through AP. Most of my teaching experience has been with 'struggling students' in a very poor urban district. I have also worked with special ed students, and with ELL. Most recently I have been working in a program for students who are behind on credits and are taking courses that they have previously failed online to recover credits. The year prior, I worked in a 1:1 Chromebook schools, and am now housed under the IT Department. I am very interested in the place of technology in education, especially in science education and as a modification and accommodation tool for students. Technology can be a great resource to engage students, and to level the playing field. I have learned a lot in these positions, and hope to share some of what I have learned with you. I am still constantly learning and hope that this can become a place that we can share and continue to learn from each other to help our students.
Outside of teaching, I am a proud mother of two elementary aged boys of my own. I enjoy spending time with them hiking, swimming, playing board games, gardening, and scrap booking.
As you peruse, please feel free to use the search box on the right to search for specific content. You can see my resources in my TeachersPayTeachers store. I created my store in 2012 during a particularly difficult teaching year, as a way to connect with other educators and share things that were working. I have continued to add to it since then with some of my favorite resources. As you will see, my passions are differentiation, hands-on relevant lessons, and using technology to help a wide range of students be successful.
